Report on european radar data for use in NIMROD
GIBSON, M.
The Met. Office has recently begun to receive radar data from 12 French radar sites and one Belgian radar site. Data from the Belgian data and 6 of the French radars have been examined for quality. The remaining 6 French sites are currently undergoing evaluation. It has been found that the data is of significantly higher quality (in terms of both probability of detection and quantitative accuracy) than the data currently used in the Nimrod rainfall analysis field over the continent (where satellite correlation is used to determine a rainrate field). Hence it is recommended that the Belgian radar data and data from the initial 6 French radar sites be incorporated in the Nimrod rain analysis. This should lead to improved Nimrod analysis fields, earlier warning of storms approaching the UK from the south and improved radar input to the NWP model.
